history
The Knights of the Monastery of Yuste Association was founded in 1957 and is dedicated to promoting what the Monastery of Yuste is and represents. It is placed under the patronage of Saint Jerome, Patron Saint of the Order to which the Monastery belonged.
In the “Villa de Cuacos”, on the fourth of May, nineteen hundred and fifty-seven, at Plaza de España No. 1, a group of Extremadurans decided to found the Association, forming a Management Committee, and immediately afterwards held a General Meeting with the first twenty-one members.
Prior to the Constitution of the Association of Knights of the Monastery of Yuste, there was a session of the plenary meeting of the Town Council a17> of the Town of Cuacos, which gave rise to the foundation.
In the Minutes Book of the Town Council of Cuacos (Cáceres), on pages 157 and 158, there is a record of the extraordinary municipal plenary session held on 22 September 1956, which was attended by the Mayor, Mr. Nicolás Mateos García, and Councillors Mr. Dámaso Hornero Pérez, Mr. Tiburcio Pérez Mateos, Mr. Germán Pérez Hornero, Mr. Ezequiel Pérez Trancón, and Mr. José López Pérez, with Mr. Domiciano Corisco González acting as Secretary.
This Municipal Session was held on the occasion of the “Anniversary of the death of Emperor Charles V”, in which the rest of the members of the Council were informed of the events held the previous day.
The minutes read as follows:
“…at the request of the Honourable Mr Francisco Fernández Serrano, Canon Archivist of the Metropolitan Churches of La Seo and El Pilar in Zaragoza, thirteen prominent figures from the region (priests and lay people), all of whom were great admirers of Yuste, gathered for a friendly meal to discuss matters relating to the 400th anniversary of the death of Emperor Charles V.”
On that day a Requien Mass was celebrated in the Parish of the Villa de Cuacos in suffrage of the Emperor’s soul, as it coincided with the three hundred and ninety-eighth anniversary of his death.
The events at the Monastery of Yuste concluded “with the fervent desire to form an association, which shall be called “Knights of the Monastery of Yuste”. (from the Minutes of Sessions).
At that historic moment of the Association’s Constitution, Mr. Nicolás Mateos García was appointed President, Mr. Domiciano Corisco González was appointed member, Mr. Porfirio García Bautista was appointed Secretary, and eighteen others were appointed as founding members.
Once the Bylaws were drafted and approved by the General Meeting and subsequently by the Ministry of the Interior, according to Oficio 2527 of His Excellency the Civil Governor of Cáceres, Decree of January 25, 1941, regulating the exercise of the right of associations, the constitution and operation of the Association was authorized.
On 18 January 1996, the then President of the Association, Mr Manuel Martín Lobo, requested His Majesty King Juan Carlos I to grant the institution the title of “Royal”. The Secretary General of the Household of His Majesty the King, on 19 February 1996, replied to the President in the following terms:
“…I have discussed the matter with His Majesty the King, and as he has seen fit to grant the aforementioned title, I am pleased to enclose the corresponding Credential.”
The Statutes that currently govern our Royal Association were approved at the General Meeting Extraordinary held on the day 01 of October 2022 a15> 2022 and registered with the Ministry of the Interior on the day 04 of May of 2023.
